I'll start backwards.....

With the explosion of Social Media and knowing "where to be", Kimono's was really only fun the last night and the first night. In between it was just too packed. Time to find another hang out for mid week me thinks. And with everyone and their dog having a 5MP camera on their phone, it is no longer "what happens as LS, stays at LS". Party accordingly.

The Blogger Open : my team won. So someone has really bad math skills! A valiant effort my Mike McGarel on "the scoring app". I feel for any family that comes to Fantasia Golf that day.

The CGS was a complete and utter train wreak. Whoever thought *not* to put a warning on screen and verbally before Zimmern did his stuff needs firing. Atrocious. And I'd have to say that most of the audience (especially non-US based folks) had no idea who he was. Then came out the blow torch......it was down hill the moment he hit the stage. When the pretzel cookie is the best part of the CGS you have missed your mark by many, many miles. Bring back the likes of the conductor. Now he was impressive.

Wifi : I think the same coffee nazis who kept stealing the coffee ran the wifi. IBM can measure how many purchases are made on mobile devices over Christmas, but not guesstimate that each attendee will have 3-4 wifi devices? A complete WTF all conference long. Social my arse. I wonder how many bloggers, tweeters and analysts gave up posting content about LS12 because of the LS12 wifi?

Blogger of the Year : rightly won by Stuart McIntyre.

Parties : invited to a few. Attended more that I wasn't invited to. The Ephox invite to Australia Day was there, but only if you gave them a closing Portal deal. And I thought I was egotistical! Needless to say I didn't go. But they can have all my portal deals for Q1 and Q2 if they like......or as it's more correctly called: none.

Sessions. I didn't attend that many. Most lost me at the length of the session title and if you were not there for Cloud, XPages or Connections you were shit out of luck. And having the keynotes early didn't help either ;) I pity any Domino Admin that turned up this year, and I think that, and the crappy scheduling will affect the numbers next year. There was no balance if you were there for XPages as you either had days of nothing or 5-6 sessions all at the same time you wanted to attend (ironic that I'm complaining about lack of content and at the same time, cluttered content. If you were there I think you get my meaning). This ain't IBM's first rodeo here so I'm not sure how they don't get this right. There were also a lot of IBMers presenting. I'm guessing IBM want *their* people out front as SME's when businesses realize social and cloud are just prefix words for "services". And where was Lotusphere Idol? I owe a hat tip to Scott Souder for his jibe at the Ask the PM's session. A classy comeback from a classy dude.

Rebranding/Renaming : As IBM bolts headlong away from the Lotus name IBM Docs got on the of the biggest cheers in Ask the PM's as the PM pointed out she had the shortest names product. I guess Lotus Knows not to name any product "Lotus". And Notes, Domino and Quickr are not being rebranded. Party accordingly.

Coffee : tumble weeds, like the coffee

Quickr : Again tumble weeds. In the customer evangelist panel (yes, the panels were actually good!!!) 4 of the 6 "customers" on stage mentioned that they used Quickr. IBM is missing a big opportunity here and will continue to miss it until it sees the need for something that IS NOT FileNet nor Sharepoint. And Connections Files ain't it. In my opinion Connections Files is about as useful as Quickr Entry was. And Quickr Entry was crap. These are your customer evangelists (your = IBM). Do you listen to them?

Capacity : I don't know the official number, but my gut was 4,500-ish. Vendors on the showcase floor did say that foot traffic was much the same as last year. My observation is that there were way more IBMers than before. The Blogger Open was packed, so registrations for that were up 40-50% :)

OGS : yes, I was watching it from my hotel room on the Dolphin, sans clothes. OGS product mentions usually go from flagship down to toilet paper in that order. Let's just say Domino and Notes was 1:40 in before it was even mentioned. Of a 2:00 show. But it was better than last year. And no animals were harmed in the making of the OGS (that should really be implied don't you think?).

Social : Before LS12 it was an overdone word if ever there was one. It's the new decades "e-commerce". Irksome and buzzy in all the wrong way. Like cloud.

Overall : I had fun. I always do when 100's of my favorite people are in the same place, but somehow (and I can't quite put my finger on it) LS12 seemed like it was done on the cheap this year. Maybe the recession is starting to bite even the titan-esque IBM or maybe I am wrong. Either way I had fun and look forward to a more balanced and less cluttered schedule next year.

Why you really need Windows 7 x64 and 8GB RAM on PC’s

So here is a comparison of Windows 7 with 3GB vs 8GB RAM. The machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

First up 3GB running Windows 7, 32 bit:

This machine runs the usual. Notes 8.5.3 + Admin + DDE, Quickr, Skype, TweetDeck Office, vSphere Client, etc. It never drops below 70% used with my normal day to day operation.

This same machine with 8GB and Windows 7, 64 bit (you need 64 bit to see more than 4GB RAM)....the penalty? You need to reinstall everything....but with Windows you're rebuilding your machine every 18 months or so anyway right? ;)

So with 8GB RAM it very, very rarely gets over 45% under "normal" loads, and I've yet to see it over 60% at all:

With RAM being cheap it's a simple upgrade. For the ThinkPad I got Kingston ValueRAM 8GB PC3 SODIMM kit from Amazon for $36.99 (a kit of 2 x 4GB), obviously check what RAM your computer needs, and how much it can take first.

Ask the Product Managers LS12 addition - what I’d like to see answered

One of the most successful sessions of LS11 maybe back (it should be, although I'll admit I haven't checked the schedule), and if it is here are some of the things I'd like to see addressed (in no specific order):

Now that I have a Macbook Air.....Quickr Connectors for Mac. Come on, this was on last years too.

Lotus Protector for Mail Security - Your gonna make that applet (a) not an applet, and (b) faster right?

Lotus Protector for Mail Security - ICAP for Domino servers

Lotus Protector for Mail Security - SSO with Notes, like Sametime has.

Lotus Mobile Connect - any reason the fixes on Fix Central are "protected" via entitlement checks?

Wiki's/InfoCenters - the screen shots and versions in the docs are not always up to date (or even correct)

Traveler - Spell check on Android

Traveler - ActiveSync on Android (several reasons, not least the set up headaches, and the issue above)

To any PM of any product I am always full of ideas (and other stuff occasionally), but really, we don't just sit around making this stuff up. This is what my (and your) customers are asking me week in week out (OK, so the Quickr Connector one is me - I get this about once a month right now), but I'm always available to bounce ideas off when you are looking at the list of things you'd like to accomplish. I also like Rob Novak's idea (comment 25 on the above like) about round tables......

For comparison go take a peek at the LS11 addition of this post.

And I hope my posting these questions ahead of time, then possibly asking them doesn't constitute "peacocking" as that is neither the intent nor the goal of this post. Any PM is free to comment here prior to the session and I would think that would be satisfactory as well.

Snarky continuation of the annual tradition of tracing the previous years happenings......this time is, shock horror, 2011! With 2012 bearing down on us here's what took place in the last year (allegedly):

I turned 40. So much of this stuff may be wrong as my memory starts to go the way of my eyesight. Although I've managed without Viagra so far.....

The blog (or more correctly this blog) had far fewer posts than any other year. I guess my Yellow Tiger Blood is waning,

IBM looked like they were going to dump the Lotus brand. Then looked like they weren't. Then looked like they'd compromised.

With the rebranding effort some of people said "Yes, please rebrand". Others said "NO, don't rebrand", Most said "Lotus? That's still around?....I used to like 1-2-3.....what ever happened to that?"

The "Mastering XPages Book" was released. I think it shocked a whole lot of people by actually selling.

Firefox 3.x was current in-market release on 1/1/2011.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 4 was released.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 5 was released.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 6 was released.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 7 was released.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 8 was released.

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox 9 was/will be released (depends on the post date of this smirkathon. ETA 12/20/2011)

Speaking of Firefox, Firefox lost market share. I wonder why?

Speaking of browsers. Internet Explorer lost market share. Because it is a shitty browser.

Chrome almost doubled market share. It's fast. I hate to say this, but this is now my browser of choice.

Speaking of Google, their unofficial motto continues to be "Do Know Evil".

If you'd have sold your RIMM shares at the beginning of the year, you'd have gotten close to $65/share. Now? Not so much. $15-ish. That's quite a hair cut.

Speaking of RIM. The guys flying this company into the ground are still there!

Speaking of RIM. They released a tablet. Without email. Apparently someone at RIM thinks they can do something other than email. It appears they were wrong. The guys flying this company into the ground are still there!

Speaking of RIM. They had a 3 day world wide outage. Every IT person on the planet said "Meh, I have an iPhone". Every business person on the planet said "WTF! Get me an iPhone". Every CEO on the planet told their CIO's, "WTF! Allow iPhones on the networks". Lotus Traveler got installed in a whole lot of places after that. The guys flying this company into the ground are still there!

Speaking of RIM. Dear reader, your DR tests are useless. Until a disaster happens, your paper-based DR plan is like gold. After a disaster, your paper DR plan is used as bog roll.

Speaking of RIM. If you really want to pull yourselves out of this really, really bad year simply rename or prefix all of your products with the words "Social" or "Cloud".

Speaking of IBM. Literally every product or service was renamed or brute forced to have the word "Social" in it.

Speaking of IBM. Lotus was renamed to ICS. But only in private. And on email signatures. And on business cards. Shockingly neither email signatures nor business cards are private. Who knew?

Speaking of IBM ICS, they killed the blogger program. Luckily for me I don't post very often any more.....did I already say my Yellow Tiger Blood is waning?

Speaking of IBM ICS, I was hoping to see Quickr Connectors on the Mac.

Speaking of IBM, they started a Champions program. Yeah, yeah. I'm not one. Read this blog or listen to the podcast to find out why ;)

Speaking of This Week In Lotus, I missed my first ever episode. Now I've missed a few.....did I already say my Yellow Tiger Blood is waning?

Steve Jobs died. By all accounts the dude was a complete and utter dick (yeah, I know, kettle meet pot), but all the bad stuff is forgiven forgotten when you help build the stuff he did.

Speaking of Apple, I got an iPhone. Then a Macbook Air. I hated both at first. It's only been a few weeks with the Air and my dislike is still there although "hate" is no longer the word. Not a complete fanboy. Yet. But admittedly I prefer my iPhone over my Galaxy S now.

Speaking of Apple. I would love to see Quickr Connectors on the Mac......Did I say that already?

Speaking of Apple. You really need to put a 8GB RAM option on the Air.

Speaking of Apple. How on earth can you have a phone without being able to flag favorite contacts or quick dials?

On my trusty Lenovo T500 Thinkpad (we sell these you know....Lenovo I mean, not T500's specifically) I moved from Windows 7 32 bit with 3GB to Windows 7 64 bit with 8GB RAM. I highly recommend this. And RAM is cheap nowadays. Did I say I was getting old? I don't recall....... :)

These are made up by me and are in no particular order, although IBM may have outdone themselves with 8.5.3 there are still some things I had hoped to see that didn't make it in.
1. Domino support for Lotus Protector for Mail Security (LPMS) ICAP hand-offs for attachment scanning when sending internal email.
2. LPMS iNotes user interface similar to Lotus Notes integration.
3. iCal feeds support in iNotes (although admittedly GoogleCal is there).
4. Quickr Connector support on the day of release
5. Journal sync via the replicator task (like Contacts)
6. Journal sync via Traveler to iOS and Android OSes.

I've probably missed a ton, and if I have a quick trip over to IdeaJam will provide some more.
The IBM XWork Server - the little engine that should (or here endeth the PVU nightmare)

So IBM broke it's own embargo so now we can talk about this. First go read Ed's and then Mat Newman's post if you haven't already....OK, your back...

OK, so this wasn't entirely what I was hoping for as a replacement for Domino Utility Server. But it isn't aimed at the "normal" Utility customer, it is aimed at the Lotus Domino IBM ISV. This is a dual win. One for IBM and one for the ISV community. It significantly reduces the barrier to entry when selling a Domino based application (although I am still on the fence if it *is* actually cheaper than Utility Express) and it keeps the customer looking to the application provider. What do I mean by this? It keeps IBM renewal reps away from your deals. In fact there is no renewal. This is a fixed term contract (meaning 12 months) that has to be purchased (or sold) on an annual basis. While this may mean it's not as cost effective as Utility Express it is far, far simpler. PVU is dead (we hope), long live the fixed term license. Remember to quote your customer the extra $2,000 per year for maintenance though.

So why is this a win for IBM? It gets people like me off their back.....In reality it gets them a way to push XPages without actually "pushing" XPages. The hope here is that with a reasonably cheap server solution ISVs will be able to go after pretty much any customer, no matter that platform of choice. That's what built the Lotus footprint 20 years ago so the plan seems to be to replicate (sic!) this process.

So what is the win for the customer? Ease of licensing. IBM are hoping that ISVs will use ASL (see, I told you to go read Ed's blog) so package the server license with a product. The customer gets "one throat to choke" and a fixed priced for support and renewal from said ISV. That is not to say other Lotus customers won't buy this, and if it makes financial sense they should. The specific use case I see for this is there is no CPU or core limitation (except that XWork is not available on all Domino platforms....i and z). That means the PVU hell customers find themselves in when they throw hardware at a Domino performance issue will the $2,000 and not some astronomically stupid dollar amount.

It's not all good news though. In true "let's complicate the shit out of this" IBM fashion they have deemed to add a rule that you can have up to 4 "applications" each with no more then 4 NSF files. I don't think this is too much of a stopping point but they should have just said 16 NSFs and had done with it. Still if you are an ISV with an app with more then 4 NSF files you are shit out of luck (CRM, ISO 9000, etc is what I'm thinking here). I would have also liked to see IBM allow use of the standard Domino "apps" (Discussion, team room, blog, etc) to have unlimited use on the XWork server and not count against the "sweet sixteen".

Still, all in all not a bad offering if ISVs can be attracted to the platform and start selling "No SQL Format" (NSF....see how I did that?...that be marketing that be) applications to the masses.

With Quickr 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 is was pretty easy to find out the version of Quickr Domino you were running. Simply open a browser navigate to Quickr and view the source. Right there are the top was the version. With the change to 8.5 and higher of QuickrD it is still there just a bit hidden:

View the source, just as you would with 8.2, but this time search for "QPVersion". Voila. No need to restart HTTP to see it. Still it would be nice to have a "tell quickr version" from the Domino Console but this way works.

Oh, and this means the server above is 8.5.1 FP3. The number before the period is the currently installed FP.

Finding and downloading Domino 8.5.2 server when you have Express licensing

So this is one of those posts it pains me to write....how to find software that an STS and IBM customer paid good money for by they cannot find it on IBM Passport Advantage. There is only one reason that IBM PPA is hard to use and that is due to IBM taking relatively simple activities and complicating the heck out of them (heck was not the word I was going to use here, but as this will be sent to numerous STS customers it is a PG post.....).

So how do you find the actual server download? Simply follow these steps to find the English version:
1. Log in, locate and go to the link "Software download & media access".
2. Hit "I agree"
3. Locate and click on "Download finder"
4. Click "IBM Lotus Domino Collaboration Express", then "Continue"
5. Select "English", then "Continue"
6. Expand "IBM Lotus Domino Messaging and Collaboration Express 8.5.2 for Multiplatform English eAssembly(CRC6DEN)"
7. Both Notes and Domino 8.5.2 are in there.

It is truly a shame that posts like this are necessary. A company such as IBM that touts itself as a social business company obviously has no idea what the term means. They are literally murdering any goodwill a customer had towards them by forcing this arcane and confusing interface on them.

So over that last few weeks the 2.8 firmware update for Lotus Protector for Mail Security (LPMS) rolled out. It adds some nice features but after the upgrade some STS customers (and ourselves) saw reverse DNS issues after the upgrade. Specifically LPMS would seem to drop emails even when a correct reverse was available in DNS for the sending server.

Off we go to PMR land and within a day or so IBM came back with this suggestion that has cleared up the issue:

1. Disable the Border IP Check at 'Mail Security | Policy | Advanced Parameters'
--> set smtp.border_ip_checks.enable from 1 to 0

2. Re-enable the following Receiving SMTP settings:
Enable Reverse DNS Lookup

So far it has worked for us and the customers who we help manage.
